Human trials cluster in four areas: skin, eyes, exercise recovery, and blood fats.
Does Astaxanthin Help Skin?
Skin is where the trials have looked hardest at something you can see. A systematic review found eleven clinical studies at doses around 3 to 6 mg a day, most of them reporting better skin texture, moisture or wrinkles, with no serious side effects (1). Those trials were small, ran mostly in Japanese women, and many were funded by companies with a commercial interest.
A meta-analysis then pooled nine of the randomised ones, a stricter test, and found that skin held more moisture and was more elastic than with placebo. Wrinkles improved too little to be sure the effect was real (2). Wrinkle reduction is a common selling point for astaxanthin, and it is the one claim that has not held up so far.
Does Astaxanthin Help Eye Strain?
A trial in people who work at a computer all day gave 6 mg of astaxanthin with 10 mg of lutein and 2 mg of zeaxanthin, two related pigments that build up in the eye itself, for eight weeks. Eye-hand coordination after a stint at the screen held up better than placebo, and macular pigment rose, meaning more protective pigment in the part of the retina that handles detailed central vision. Eye-tracking did not change (3). Three ingredients means nothing can be pinned on astaxanthin alone, and of the three, lutein and zeaxanthin have the longer research record (4).
The cleanest trial of astaxanthin by itself ran 4 mg a day for twelve weeks in 64 children who used screens for four hours or more daily. Symptom scores improved by about 20% against placebo, though visual acuity and focusing did not shift (5). It is a children's trial, though, so whether the same holds for adults at a higher dose is still an open question. It was also industry-sponsored, with several authors employed by the astaxanthin manufacturer.
Does Astaxanthin Help Exercise Recovery?
A 2026 meta-analysis pooled 24 randomised trials and split the question in two, which turns out to matter (6).
On recovery, creatine kinase, a blood marker of muscle damage, improved, meaning it came down. That was the most consistent finding in the analysis.
On performance, no clear benefit: nothing on VO2max, the standard measure of aerobic fitness, nor on time trials or maximum power. An earlier and smaller analysis did find a performance gain when astaxanthin was paired with regular training, with bigger effects at 20 mg a day and above (7), well over the 8 mg EU limit.
So the finding is less muscle damage showing up in the blood. Whether that lower marker reliably means less soreness, or a better session the next day, is much less clear.
Cholesterol and Triglycerides
A 2025 meta-analysis of eight randomised trials found higher HDL and lower triglycerides, and no change in LDL or total cholesterol (8). HDL and LDL are the particles that carry cholesterol around the body; triglycerides are fats circulating in the blood.
The catch is the dose. Those trials used 6 to 20 mg a day. EU supplements stop at 8 mg.
Emerging Research: Inflammation, Cognition and Bone
Inflammation has reached human trials, with results that depend on the marker and the population. A 2022 meta-analysis found lower IL-6, an inflammation marker, in people with type 2 diabetes, while two other inflammatory markers did not shift (9).
Cognition has trials too. A 2024 meta-analysis found accuracy only marginally improved, and no change in reaction time (7). Bone research is still mostly cells and animals (10).
No astaxanthin health claim is authorised in the EU. Proposed claims were assessed, found insufficiently substantiated, and sit in the register as non-authorised (11).
The Takeaway
Astaxanthin improved skin moisture and elasticity, but not wrinkles. For eye strain, some trials are positive, but the evidence is small and includes combination formulas and a children's trial. In exercise, it lowered a blood marker of muscle damage without improving performance. Blood fats improved in trials using 6 to 20 mg a day, which leaves it unclear how much an 8 mg supplement delivers.
