The human body naturally contains Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), which is mostly found in the mitochondria, which are the cellular organelles that produce energy. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) or ubiquinone is considered a vitamin or vitamin-like substance. They are naturally present in food and can also be synthesized in the body, but levels tend to decline with age as well as due to certain conditions like heart disease, cancer, genetic disorders, diabetes, and Parkinson’s disease.
CoQ10 is the coenzyme for at least three mitochondrial enzymes that is required for Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) synthesis, making it essential for the conversion of carbohydrates into energy. It was first discovered by Frederick Cane by isolating beef heart mitochondria. CoQ10 can be produced from some microorganisms, plants and animals. The most common methods for extracting CoQ10 from different samples are liquid–liquid extraction or ultrasound
extraction.
