Spermidine is a type of organic compound called a polyamine. It’s found naturally in foods like wheat and soybeans. As we age, polyamine levels decrease. Multiple health concerns are associated with lower levels of polyamines, but spermidine intake has been linked to delayed aging, a lower risk of death from all causes, and cognitive improvements in older adults at risk for dementia.

Spermidine is found naturally in foods like wheat and soybeans. It’s an organic compound called a polyamine.
At the cellular level, polyamines help flush out waste and recycle damaged cells using a process known as autophagy. They also play a role in cell growth, protein synthesis, regulating the inflammatory response, and maintaining intestinal function.
As we age, the level of polyamines declines, which is associated with different health concerns.
1. Spermidine delays aging in humans
Results
Spermidine may exert specific effects on multiple organ systems engaged in cardiovascular function, anticancer immune surveillance, and neurodegeneration, thereby reducing the incidence of major age-related diseases.

2. Higher spermidine intake is linked to lower mortality: a prospective population-based study
Results
All-cause mortality decreased with increased spermidine intake when adjusted for age, sex, and lifestyle factors. Subjects enrolled in the study in 1990 at ages ranging from 45 - 84. They were re-evaluated every 5 years through 2015. Those with the highest levels of spermidine in their diet saw the best health outcomes.

3. The effect of spermidine on memory performance in older adults at risk for dementia: A randomized controlled trial
Results
Subjects were given nutritional spermidine or a placebo over the course of three months in a double-blind trial. Those in the spermidine group saw moderate enhancement in memory performance and cognitive ability, The effect was not found in the placebo group.
