About L-Lysine 

L-Lysine is an essential amino acid found in foods like eggs and dairy, legumes, nuts and seeds, or meat and seafood. Scientific studies show that lysine improves bone health in older individuals, lowers blood sugar levels, reduces the symptoms of anxiety, and treats cold sores. People cannot synthesize lysine, so it has to be taken through food or supplements. There is no official recommended dosage, but research suggests a daily dosage of 1 to 3 grams. Lysine is generally regarded as safe, but possible side effects include gastrointestinal issues, increased calcium absorption, and in extreme cases, kidney issues.

Efficacy Studies
  1. A 2023 review article summarized decades of research on lysine for treating the herpes complex virus (cold sores). The conclusion is that lysine is a safe natural compound that effectively treats cold sores and reduces the healing time and severity of symptoms. The exact doses for this purpose, and the mechanism of action is still not known.
  2. A 2022 review article summarized the findings that lysine, among other amino acids like threonine and methionine, helps prevent age-induced bone loss.
  3. In a 2017 study, 12 healthy volunteers received intragastric infusions (200 mL) containing 5 or 10 g l-lysine or a control solution within 2 min on 3 different occasions in randomized order. Lysine reduced blood sugar levels and the glycemic response to an oral mixed-macronutrient drink.
  4. One 2004 and one 2007 study found that lysine (2.64 g per day in the 2007 study, together with arginine) significantly helps reduce anxiety.
