Gamma-aminobutyric acid (also known as GABA) is a neurotransmitter produced in our brains. In anxiety-inducing situations, GABA's role is to neutralize stress-producing hormones. When the levels of GABA our low, we may not be able to relax properly, which can lead to more issues like depression and insomnia. Therefore, GABA supplements are very useful for relaxation and stress management, as well as for mood disorders, anxiety, and ADHD. Studies done on young adults show that GABA can also lower blood pressure, help with insomnia, and boost immunity. As GABA is naturally produced, it is safe to take as a supplement in reasonable doses, but it shouldn't be mixed with other medications. Most reported side effects include headache, drowsiness, and sleepiness. The usual dosage is anywhere from 50-300 mg daily, as reported in existing studies.
