L-lysin je esenciální aminokyselina, která se vyskytuje v potravinách, jako jsou vejce a mléčné výrobky, luštěniny, ořechy a semínka nebo maso a mořské plody. Vědecké studie ukazují, že lysin zlepšuje zdraví kostí u starších jedinců, snižuje hladinu cukru v krvi, zmírňuje příznaky úzkosti a léčí opary. Lidé si lysin nedokážou syntetizovat, a proto ho musí přijímat potravou nebo doplňky. Neexistuje oficiální doporučená dávka, ale výzkum naznačuje denní dávku 1 až 3 gramy.   1. Přehledový článek z roku 2023 shrnul desítky let výzkumu lysinu při léčbě viru herpes simplex (opary). Závěr zní, že lysin je bezpečná přírodní látka, která účinně léčí opary a zkracuje dobu hojení i závažnost příznaků. Přesné dávky pro tento účel a mechanismus účinku zatím nejsou známy.
  2. Přehledový článek z roku 2022 shrnul zjištění, že lysin spolu s dalšími aminokyselinami, jako jsou threonin a methionin, pomáhá předcházet úbytku kostní hmoty způsobenému věkem.
  3. V studii z roku 2017 dostalo 12 zdravých dobrovolníků ve třech různých termínech v náhodném pořadí intragastrické infuze (200 ml) obsahující 5 nebo 10 g L-lysinu nebo kontrolní roztok během 2 minut. Lysin snížil hladinu cukru v krvi a glykemickou odpověď na perorální nápoj se smíšenými makroživinami.
  4. Jedna studie z roku 2004 a jedna z roku 2007 zjistily, že lysin (ve studii z roku 2007 2,64 g denně spolu s argininem) významně pomáhá snižovat úzkost.
