L-theanine is a naturally occurring amino acid that can be found in the green tea plant (Camelia sinensis). L-theanine acts as a neuroprotector that can cross the blood-brain barrier and have a direct effect on the brain. It is most known for its relaxing and calming effects, especially in highly stressful situations. For example, four studies using 400 mg of L-theanine found that it significantly reduced stress and anxiety in healthy participants¹. 250-400 mg of L-theanine also improved focus², sleep³, and blood pressure⁴ in healthy young adults. L-theanine is recognized as a safe supplement with little to no side effects. It may interact with medication for controlling blood pressure and treating cancer, and it is not suitable for pregnant and breastfeeding women. The usual daily dosage of L-theanine is 200-400 mg, with one tablet usually containing 200 mg.
