Astaxanthin is a carotenoid pigment naturally produced by the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis, the same pigment responsible for the pink and red coloration in salmon, shrimp, and flamingos. It belongs to the xanthophyll class of carotenoids, distinguished by its oxygenated molecular structure. Haematococcus pluvialis is recognized as one of the richest natural sources of astaxanthin.
Astaxanthin supplements are available in natural and synthetic forms. Our astaxanthin is naturally derived from Haematococcus pluvialis, the form predominantly used in the human supplement market and in the majority of published human research. Synthetic astaxanthin is chemically manufactured, used primarily as a feed additive in aquaculture, and has not been established as safe for direct human consumption.

Astaxanthin is one of the most researched carotenoid antioxidants, examined across skin, eye, joint, and exercise recovery research. Most of that research so far comes from laboratory and animal studies rather than large-scale human trials, and none of it has been evaluated or authorized as a health claim under EU Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006.
