About D-Mannose 

Mannose is a naturally occurring sugar in the human body. It can be found in fruits like cranberries, apples, and oranges. Studies have shown that D-Mannose can help prevent urinary tract infections and reduce the risk of recurrence of UTI in women. Since the antibiotic resistance of UTI pathogens has increased significantly, research has shown that D-Mannose can be used as an alternative to antibiotics. A study also found that D-mannose can alleviate the progression of osteoarthritis. The recommended daily dose is 1-2g for preventing UTI and 3-6g for treating active infection.

Benefits of D-Mannose
  • Important in human metabolism (glycosylation of certain proteins)
  • Dietary supplements can reduce the risk of UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) and its recurrence. Basically, it can inhibit the E. coli bacteria that cause UTI and prevent it from attaching to the urothelium.
  • Research suggests it can be used as an alternative to antibiotics for the treatment of UTI.
  • Antibiotic resistance of UTI pathogens is increasing alarmingly.
Efficacy Studies

1. A literature review from 2022 by Ala-Jaakkola R et al. concluded that D-mannose supplementation may be as effective as taking antibiotics, but more studies are needed.
2. A study from 2014, Kranjčec et al. did a study on the effectiveness of D-mannose in preventing recurring urinary tract infections, when compared to a placebo or the antibiotic Nitrofurantoin. Overall, 98 patients who took 2 grams of D-mannose powder daily for six months had less chance of having recurring infections. This was as effective as taking the antibiotic.
3. Niehues et al. reviewed that D-mannose significantly improves the symptoms of carbohydrate-deficient glycoprotein syndrome type 1b, a rare genetical disorder which prevents your body from producing D-mannose.
