What is Astaxanthin?

Astaxanthin is one of the pigments behind the deep red-pink colour in salmon, shrimp, and flamingo feathers. It belongs to a family of natural pigments called carotenoids, the same family as beta-carotene, but its shape sets it apart. The molecule is long enough to stretch right across the membrane that surrounds a cell, with each end reaching out into the watery space on either side.

Vitamin C works in the watery parts of your body and vitamin E sits inside the fatty membrane itself; astaxanthin bridges the two. That is what got researchers interested in it in the first place (1).

Where Does Astaxanthin Come From?

Salmon and shrimp get their colour from what they eat, and further down the food chain it is microalgae that make astaxanthin in the first place. The species used for supplements is Haematococcus pluvialis, a freshwater alga that produces it as a built-in sunscreen when strong sunlight or drought stresses it, turning from green to deep red as it does.

It is the richest natural source known, and small amounts also reach you through the diet if salmon, shrimp, or krill are already part of it (1).

Natural vs Synthetic Astaxanthin: What Is the Difference?

If you are buying a supplement in Europe, this is largely decided for you. 

The form authorised for supplements here is an extract of Haematococcus pluvialis algae. The synthetic version is made from petrochemicals and sold as a feed additive, to colour farmed fish, and almost none of the human research has used it (2).

It is the same compound both ways, but not the same mixture: the algae makes one main form of the molecule, attached to fatty acids, while the factory version is a blend of forms with no fats attached. Those fats are not the absorption advantage they are sometimes sold as, though. Digestion strips them off, and free astaxanthin is taken up rather better (2).

How Strong an Antioxidant Is It?

Antioxidants work by mopping up free radicals, unstable molecules that build up from stressors like sunlight, pollution, and hard exercise, and wear down cells over time if left unchecked.

In the lab, astaxanthin is potent. In membrane-like test systems it has scavenged free radicals more effectively than vitamin E (3). Results like these depend heavily on the conditions of the test, and this is where the huge multiplier figures on supplement sites come from, the ones claiming it is hundreds or thousands of times stronger than vitamin C.

When researchers pooled 12 trials covering 380 people, astaxanthin produced a small drop in one blood marker of damage. Markers of inflammation also came down, but mainly in people with diabetes rather than in healthy volunteers (4).

So the short answer is that astaxanthin is a strong antioxidant in a laboratory and a mild one in a person, at least so far. More and larger trials are needed.

What Has Astaxanthin Been Studied For?

The human trials cluster in four areas: skin, eyes, exercise recovery, and blood fats. They are generally small and short, and they do not all point the same way. In exercise, the signal is in blood markers of muscle damage rather than in performance (5). Several eye studies have given astaxanthin alongside lutein and zeaxanthin, which makes its own contribution hard to separate out (6).

How Much Astaxanthin Can You Take?

EFSA's acceptable daily intake for astaxanthin is 0.2 mg per kilo of body weight, or about 14 mg a day from all sources for a 70 kg adult. It judged 8 mg from a supplement safe on top of a high intake from fish and shellfish (7), and that is now the authorised maximum in the EU for anyone over 14 (8).

Many human studies have used 4 to 12 mg a day (6), so the EU ceiling sits inside the range the research has actually tested.

Side Effects and Safety

Astaxanthin has a good safety record across the human trials run so far, with no serious side effects reported (6). Astaxanthin supplements are not for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, as there is not enough research in either group to establish that they are safe.

Conclusion

Astaxanthin has an unusually good laboratory record and a human evidence base that has not caught up with it. What you can act on is narrower: choose the algae-derived form, and treat 8 mg as the number rather than a starting point to build from.
