L-Lysine is an essential amino acid found in foods like eggs and dairy, legumes, nuts and seeds, or meat and seafood. Scientific studies show that lysine improves bone health in older individuals (1), lowers blood sugar levels (2), reduces the symptoms of anxiety (3, 4), and treats cold sores (5). People cannot synthesize lysine, so it has to be taken through food or supplements. There is no official recommended dosage, but research suggests a daily dosage of 1 to 3 grams (5).
